VPC Ensemble - 'Life Is A Strange Loop'

7/10

VPC Ensemble’s debut album 'Life Is A Strange Loop' is a record that looks to create one continuous state of attention. Across its 32 minute runtime, the New York collective moves through ambient textures, jazz improvisation and space-rock phrasing with a patient sense of development, allowing ideas to recur, shift and gradually take on new meaning.

Led by Dash Lunde, the release draws inspiration from Douglas Hofstadter’s writing on consciousness and self-reference. It's a concept that is ten translated into looping forms and recurring patterns that mirror the way memory, identity and experience seem to circle back on themselves.

Throughout, the electric guitar often carries a plaintive, floating quality, while flute, electric viola, samplers, drums and wordless vocals give the record a broader electroacoustic character. There are clear links to the meditative work of Alice Coltrane and Laraaji, but VPC Ensemble retain enough unpredictability through improvisation to keep the music feeling open rather than overly composed.

But it's the balance between stillness and movement that remains one of the album’s strongest qualities. At points, the music feels almost suspended; elsewhere, percussion and layered textures introduce a stronger sense of momentum. Because the piece is presented as one uninterrupted work, those shifts feel gradual and cumulative rather than sudden.

The album’s wider theme was also sharpened by Dash’s experience of becoming a parent. Thinking about being held by his own parents while holding his son gave the record’s interest in cycles and continuity a more personal dimension, grounding its larger philosophical ideas in something recognisably human.

As a debut album, 'Life Is A Strange Loop' is assured in its commitment to atmosphere and deep listening. It asks for patience, but rewards it with a carefully built sense of immersion at every turn. Here, VPC Ensemble have created a record that treats repetition as a way of revealing how much can change within a familiar pattern, no matter how long it takes to circle back.
