Mogwai - 'As The Love Continues'

7/10

Since their incarnation more than 25 years ago, Scottish post-rockers Mogwai have always been ones searching for beauty and euphoria within their sound. Known for creating awe-inspiring soundscapes, the band have recently begun to split their time between their own material and scores, aiming to grow their experience in creating grander and more cinematic music in the process. So after spending the last few years creating soundtracks for the film Kin and TV series ZeroZeroZero, they return with their tenth full-length 'As The Love Continues', a record that sees them search for a more humbled and driven guise.

Over the years, the sound of Mogwai has been a free and lucid one. While originally driving their heels in hard on the conventional post-rock aesthetic, this last decade has seen them spread their creative wings even further, venturing into a more unique territory that they can call their own. The result has been this subtle blend of post-rock intentions and a wistful attitude that creates a more passionate direction, and this is exactly what we experience on 'As The Love Continues'. Focusing on the raw and sweeping atmosphere throughout, it feels as though Mogwai have not only found their feet within the genre, but are now looking to push that style as far as it'll go.

In all, 'As The Love Continues' makes for a fresh and warming offering from the group. Filled with all the same bright and soaring appeal we have been treated to over the years, it shows a level of consistency that we rarely see these days. While not one of their most captivating releases, it still gives us plenty to digest and signals that they are far from low on ideas yet.
