MOONPIE - 'SET US FREE'

8/10

Over these last few months, Swedish duo MOONPIE have been quick to establish themselves as one of the more innovative names on the rise right now. Introducing themselves with a vibrant run of releases so far this year, the pair have quickly earned a reputation for broad and immersive soundscapes, all wrapped up in a psychedelic pursuit at every turn. And with the buzz surrounding them continuing to grow, they are now looking to cement their dynamic direction to date as they release their hotly-tipped debut EP 'SET US FREE', a collection that heightens their already tantalising aesthetic.

Much like what their initial offerings introduced us to, 'SET US FREE' makes for an incredibly rich and riveting listen. Taking cues from classic soul grooves and blending them with this kaleidoscopic approach to both sound and production, this seven-track offering delivers this wildly unpredictable flow as it plays. With each track looking to venture down its own unique path throughout, MOONPIE are instantly marking themselves as one of the more innovative and adventurous acts emerging on the scene, adding a breath of fresh air to their arena as well.

It may be early days for them still, but 'SET US FREE' is a strong and confident introduction to what they have to offer. Capturing some brilliantly varied and unique ideas from beginning to end, it feels like MOONPIE are certainly setting themselves up for greatness with this one.
