Nick Cave - 'Seven Psalms'

7/10

Throughout his tenure, Nick Cave has been a consistent voice for those looking for something more from this world. His writing, musings, and lyrics have been a constant reminder to search for something deeper and greater than what we experience on a day-to-day. But with the pandemic forcing so many to reflect on their lives and experiences, it feels like we are living through some kind of rebirth in how we see ourselves. And so Cave has looked to masterfully illustrate the last few years with 'Seven Psalms', a collection of short verses that aim to heighten his already pronounced stature.

While originally written back in the height of the pandemic, Nick Cave's personal loss of his son Jethro earlier this year gives these offerings a far more devastating context. In all, 'Seven Psalms' has been described as "one long meditation—on faith, rage, love, grief, mercy, sex and praise", and given the state of things in the world right now, comes as a welcome respite. His beautiful delivery and ethereal production behind each one gives this sense of hope amongst the darkness, something that feels permanent but we all know will be seen as temporary given time.

Nick Cave has always been such an open book within his music, and so 'Seven Psalms' feels like a far more intimate look into his state of mind. A wonderfully rousing offering that cements him as a true innovator on the world's stage, and someone many should still turn to in their time of need.
