Serge & The Currents release debut single 'This Too Shall Pass'

There's something reassuringly grounded about ‘This Too Shall Pass’, the debut single from Serge & The Currents. Led by Naarm/Melbourne-based guitarist, composer and educator Sergio Ercole, the project draws on decades of experience without sounding weighed down by it, instead delivering a song that feels relaxed, melodic and emotionally clear.

At its heart, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ is about the aftermath of a breakup and the strange tension between wanting to move forward and still being pulled back by memory. Ercole writes from that in-between space with a good deal of restraint, focusing on the gradual process of accepting that even the most difficult moments eventually change shape.

Musically, the track is bright enough to keep that melancholy from becoming heavy. Shuffling drums, acoustic textures and expressive guitar lines give the song an easygoing country-pop feel, while hints of Southwestern and Latin influence add a little more colour around the edges. There's also a distinctly Australian character in the vocal delivery and melodic phrasing, which helps the track avoid sounding overly indebted to its roots influences.

Warm, thoughtful and quietly assured, ‘This Too Shall Pass’ is a strong introduction to Serge & The Currents and a promising start to this new chapter in Sergio Ercole’s long musical journey.
