Sigur Rós - 'ÁTTA'

7/10

While bands in their field aren't usually ones to explode and become one of the most admired names on the planet, Icelandic trio Sigur Rós have truly broken the mould when it comes to creating awe-inspiring music that crosses both genre and language barriers. Throughout a multitude of warm and enticing releases since the late 90s, they have hit almost legendary status with their approach to long, drawn-out compositions that manage to strike an impactful chord with the listener. And after a full decade since their last full-length outing 'Kveikur', they return with their long-awaited eighth studio album 'ÁTTA', a record that looks to reestablish those heartfelt values.

On the surface, 'ÁTTA' comes across as a standard Sigur Rós release. Soft yet euphoric tones stretch across this sprawling new collection, leading into tranquil areas of near silence that give an eagerness to their soft and sweeping ideals. But despite its atmospheric direction from start to finish, there is something beautifully endearing about its composition. With such a featherlight touch to both its production and songwriting, they are once again able to create something wondrous from such little intervention, showing that they have not lost their touch when it comes to brilliantly heartwarming offerings.

It may have arrived after a decade away, mainly so that frontman Jónsi could pursue new projects, but 'ÁTTA' sits as a wonderfully refined and immersive listen. Captivating and shimmering as often as possible, they are returning with a firm and solid LP that reignites that old flame once again.
