Underworld & Iggy Pop - 'Teatime Dub Encounters'

7/10

When it comes to unusual collaborations, not many would have expected progressive dance duo Underworld to be teaming with legendary punk singer Iggy Pop for new release. Iggy Pop has been famously against creating electronic music over the years, but I think when it comes to working with Underworld, he has set his ideals aside and together they have managed to create something far removed from what either of them would have been expected to make.

'Teatime Dub Encounters' may sound like a twee and tongue-in-cheek release, and in some ways it is, but ultimately the two acts have managed to come together to push the envelope of electronic music and deliver something more memorable than many would have thought. Talking on an almost spoken-word-inspired aesthetic, Pop uses his time on the EP to tell captivating stories over a usually unchanging composition from the two producers, making this feel far more like the Underworld of the 90s, steeped in the context of hedonism and drug-fuelled mania.

Yet despite only being four tracks in length, the pair of artists have managed to unveil something that seems so at odds with their most recent projects. It feels like these ageing musicians got together and wanted to do something reminiscent of their youth, and ironically feels more post-modern in the process.
