Vinyl sales for 2014 top 1million copies

After it was reported earlier in the year that 2014 had been the biggest selling year for vinyl sales this century, it has now surpassed the 1million copies mark for the first time since 1996.

Although sales of the format have been growing steadily year on year, it was the release of Pink Floyd's latest album 'The Endless River' that not only helped it over the milestone, but became the fastest selling vinyl album of the last 14 years, shifting 6000 copies in its first week.

The boost in sales has been attributed to a number of factors including Urban Outfitters selling the format in their shops, as well as high-profile promotional campaigns like Record Store Day and Jack White's ultra-LP of 'Lazaretto'.

Speaking to BBC 5Live, Official Charts Company Chief Executive Mark Talbot said, “In an era when we’re all talking about digital music, the fact that these beautiful physical artefacts are still as popular as they are is fantastic... Only five years ago this business was worth around £3m a year. This year it’s going to be worth £20m.”

He also went on to discuss the possibility of introducing a new vinyl-only chart into the Official Charts Company listings.
