Biig Piig - 'Bubblegum'

7/10

Throughout the last few years, emerging Irish artist Biig Piig has been one of the more progressive names to enter the alt-pop arena.. With an international appeal that regularly sees her sing in a mixture of English and Spanish as she sees fit, she has created this wonderfully aloof persona that perfectly reflects her own enigmatic style and direction. But now settled in Los Angeles since 2020, she is beginning to think more about the isolating nature of her career and delivers her debut mixtape 'Bubblegum', a release that looks to express the challenging experience moving halfway around the world has had on her.

Over the years, Biig Piig has always been one to try and invent new concepts in which to take her sound, and 'Bubblegum' is certainly no different. While much of this new collection sees her in a sombre and pensive light, the production behind each track is a varied and innovative affair to say the least. Whether its the bold and bouncing energy of 'Kerosene' or the sweeping dream-pop vibes of 'This Is What They Meant', she seem more than comfortable in them all. And although it may not be the most succinct offering, it shows incredible promise for her future.

Overall, 'Bubblegum' is more of a smorgasbord of musical creativity than a developed full-length release. Each track has this unique and distinctive quality to it, showcasing her incredible diverse aesthetic, but has trouble gelling together at times. Either way, we are seeing Biig Piig in her most ambitious guise yet, something we can't wait to hear more of.
