Dutch Uncles - 'True Entertainment'

8/10

Ever since they first emerged with their stunning self-titled debut LP back in 2009, Dutch Uncles have always been seen as one of the more inventive outfits working the outer peripheries of the mainstream. Despite never achieving the renowned commercial success they have deserved over the years, they have still managed to maintain their fresh and adventurous quality throughout a run of releases ever since. And now after a five-year gap since their last collection 'Big Balloon', they are back once again with their dexterous sixth studio album 'True Entertainment', a record that looks to keep that vibrant streak alive.

Featuring guest appearances from the likes of Metronomy's Anna Prior and Everything Everything's Jonathan Higgs, 'True Entertainment' sits as one of their most ambitious outings to date. Bringing back more of that rich and eclectic direction they have been building for themselves since their earliest beginnings, this new offering sees them pursue a rousing array of shimmering textures and dynamic instrumentation, making for an incredibly explorative yet still cohesive listen throughout.

It may have arrived after a longer break than normal for the band, but 'True Entertainment' was certainly worth the wait. With almost every track proving a fun and uplifting surprise as it plays, they have returned with a wonderfully special full-length here, one that continues their fresh and distinctive ascent from start to finish.
