Getting To Know... Deer Fellow

After establishing themselves with a wondrous array of gems these last few years, emerging duo Deer Fellow return once again to unveil their shimmering new EP 'Unraveling'.

Conjuring more of that glittering folk-pop sound they are known for, 'Unraveling' makes for a wonderfully rich and compelling listen. Filled with warm and effervescent textures, a vibrant atmosphere, and their own captivating dual vocals throughout, they are certainly looking to sweep us away with this mesmerising new collection.

So with the new EP available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Matt - Guitar

Alyssa - Violin

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Matt - Oldies & 90's alt pop.

Alyssa - Motown, oldies, 90s pop.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Matt - Abbey Road by The Beatles

Alyssa - Might have been N'Sync or Dixie Chicks on cassette haha.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Matt - 'Armchairs' by Andrew Bird

Alyssa - 'Homesick' by Sleeping at Last

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Matt - Always unplanned, I just mess around on the guitar.

Alyssa - Not really, but I'm always taking notes or pictures of passages I like in books for inspiration.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Matt - Matilda Mann, Hether, Alice Phoebe Lou, Still Woozy, Julia Jacklin, Mauno.

Alyssa - Joseph, Victoria Bigelow, Hozier, Andrew Bird, FKJ.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Bon Iver, Andrew Bird, Kimbra, Night Beds.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Matt - Inspiring others, brightening someone's mood.

Alyssa - Getting lost in the moment of making it, when someone tells us that our songs affected them or they could relate to the lyrics, remembering that not everyone can make music for a living and that's pretty special.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Playing background shows, not feeling valued or seen, that there are so many fish in the sea.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Comparison is the thief of joy.
