Algiers - 'There Is No Year'

7/10

Over the last few years, Algiers have managed to carve out quite a niche for themselves. After introducing us to their bold and euphoric gospel-meets-rock aesthetic on their 2015 self-titled debut album, the band quickly and suddenly brought their direction to the next level on the exceptional 'The Underside Of Power' in 2017, cementing them as a force to be reckoned with the world over. Now after three years away from their self-created buzz, the Atlanta-based group return with their third studio effort 'There Is No Year', which sees less fanfare but still the same vibrant energy.

While their last LP 'The Underside Of Power' was filled with these explosive and thunderous moments of sheer power, 'There Is No Year' instantly sees Algiers in a far calmer light. Rather than see them explore a multitude of diverse and euphoric production methods, this new collection seems to focus more on the voice of frontman Franklin James Fisher. Known for his stunning and impactful vocals, he looks to lead the sound of this new effort through his poised and composed charisma that seems less likely to leave you taken aback and more inclined to lean in for a closer listen.

It certainly feels like a more stripped-back release this time around, but it still has the same broad and anthemic tendencies that the band have always looked to explore. A more refined collection that still sees them produce plenty of the same goods once again.
