Alt-J - 'This Is All Yours'

8/10

It is no surprise that Alt-J received such notoriety for their 2012 debut. The first full-length 'An Awesome Wave' was one of the most original and captivating records of the last decade and earned the band international fame and success, as well as the coveted Mercury Music Prize that year. But now with one member gone, the newly formed three-piece Alt-J look to rebuild themselves for their second effort, and have in the process given us a far simpler record.

While their first album played around with intensive bass tones and experimental electronics, 'This Is All Yours' is a far more stripped back record, using the band's irreverent harmonies and long-winding soundscapes as its focus. While the electronics still have a place on this record, they are seldom seen and has allowed to band to produce a record with more heart and given a more human feel to their album.

If Alt-J ever produced an acoustic album, this album would provide the majority of the material. It's basic yet transpiring sound gives the band a whole new side to their sound and has allowed them to open up and produce songs without over-complicating them, which does seem a trend on most band's sophomore albums. But still, an accomplished release that will pair very nicely with their debut.
