The I.L.Y.'s - 'Scum With Boundaries'

8/10

Around this time last year, Death Grips shared an unexplained record from a group called The I.L.Y.'s. We now know that this is a side-project of Death Grips members Zach Hill and Andy Morin. And while it still has a lot of that Death Grips mayhem, it has been condensed down into something some people may considerable "listenable" as 'Scum With Boundaries' is certainly a far cry from their main output.

Mixing trashing guitars, drum machines and synths into something that isn't a pure wall of noise, this new record seems to act as an outlet for the pair's softer side. With tracks like 'Peace & Quiet' and 'Stop Yelling In The Museum' acting as post-modern punk tracks that have this real sense of fun about them, it's almost as if they are showing us what Death Grips would be if they reduced the outrageous distortion and tempo, which is something quite enjoyable indeed.

With this fantastic "we don't care" attitude about it, 'Scum With Boundaries' is a one of kind release. While it is easy to make comparisons, you can tell that only a record this off the wall could have come from the Death Grips camp.
