When the indie darlings released their fourth full-length 'Listen' back in 2014, The Kooks seemed to be undergoing a musical evolution in their sound. Ditching the twinkly indie-pop direction of their initial years for something a little harder and more ambitious. So now as they return after a four-year break, the band have taken the criticism on board and delivered a record that fits there preferred intentions, without looking to reject their original ideals.

The one thing that really stands out on this new release is just how bold and grand the songs appear to be. While they have always had their anthemic numbers, this record seems purposely built to be played in large stadium and festival arenas, giving it more of a pulsing pace than the jolly old knees-up they were known for. 'Let's Go Sunshine' seems to want to shine the band in a more mature light, stepping away from their perky youth in order to share a collection of tracks that best reflect their current state and age.

This kind of feels like the music Blur and Oasis were putting this late in their career. Less energy but more power, and it is a sound that seems to suit them to a tee. A placeholder release in many cases, but still one with plenty to enjoy and keep their loyal fanbase happy.
