Rhye - 'Spirit'

7/10

After returning with his superb sophomore album 'Blood' last year, his first for more than five years, producer and frontman Mike Milosh aka Rhye has clearly had a wave of new inspiration these last few months. After compiling a eclectic remix album to accompany his latest full-length at the end of 2018, he has now turned completely around to deliver a swooning and ethereal release in the form of 'Spirit', a record that looks to showcase the singer's incredible voice while also the dexterity he has for smooth and atmospheric compositions.

Fans of Rhye would have seen this new collection coming a mile off. While normally tied to his bold and eccentric productions, Milosh's vocals have become a more integral elements of the band's sound in recent years, and so giving it the listeners full attention was always going to be their next step. Inspired by his own love of piano, 'Spirit' is a completely stripped down collection of bold and yet softened ideas that look to give the audience an inside understanding into the complex musical process the outfit has always looked to produce, through the guise of a sparse and warming new release.

At just 28 minutes in length, this new project is certainly their briefest to date, but it manages to pack in a diverse array of expressive new singles, all led with that ghostly voice of Milosh. An interesting and engaging record at the very least, 'Spirit' manages to display the unique prowess of the frontman in a wonderfully warming way.
