Alastair Macduff - 'Kåtebol'

7/10

The debut solo album from Glasgow-born, Sweden-based artist Alastair Macduff begins with a small hamlet in western Sweden, but quickly opens into a larger meditation on landscape, memory, time and the strange emotional pull of places that seem to remember us long after we have moved through them.

Across sixteen tracks, 'Kåtebol' builds into a world from off-kilter dream-pop, glacial piano, ambient drift and misty lo-fi electronics, as the music itself settles in gradually, like weather.

The opening and closing 'Ödehus' pieces frame the record around abandoned buildings, the original inspiration behind the project, while tracks such as 'Old telegraph pole', 'Cows on the shoreline', 'Dust in sunlight' and 'The wee path' turn ordinary details into something unexpectedly evocative. They offer fragments of place, the sort of things that become meaningful simply because somebody noticed them.

Meanwhile, compositions like 'Ryr dream', 'Lersjön mist' and 'Above Sannesjön' deepen the sense of atmosphere, while ‘The time before us’ and ‘Overgrown yet remembered’ push the album towards a more openly reflective relationship with the past.

The occasional presence of voices, including his daughter Ingrid, makes the record feel even more personal. Those human moments sit gently inside music otherwise dominated by environment and texture, reinforcing the sense that people are only temporary inhabitants of something much older.

In all, 'Kåtebol' is intimate without becoming small, pastoral without becoming quaint, and nostalgic without disappearing into the past. It feels like walking through a half-remembered landscape at dusk and realising the place has been quietly waiting for you.
