The Amazons - 'The Amazons'

7/10

Having been one of the most talked about new bands of the year, The Amazons have followed on from Sundara Karma in becoming the next big Reading-based band the country is getting excited about. And just like their local rivals, this self-titled debut album is a mixture of high-energy and sombre moments that makes for a truly diverse and enjoyable listen.

While their sound doesn't really contain anything special, it is the band's energy and overall songwriting prowess that has seen them rise above so many in the hype machine. Tracks like 'Burn My Eyes' and 'In My Mind' show off their more raucous side, while 'Junk Food Forever' and 'Black Magic' deliver those much needed radio-friendly singles that help bring this record to life, and prevent it from slipping into the realms of the dreaded landfill-indie sound.

To be fair to The Amazons though, this is still a very good first album. It is clear that they have found a style that works for them, yet with still room to grow around the edges. It makes for a very exciting release and shows great promise for their future.
