ARTIST OF THE WEEK: No.349 - Magdalena Bay

After spending the last few years building up an incredible repertoire of broad and shimmering alt-pop efforts, fast-rising duo Magdalena Bay have now taken the plunge and announced the details behind their highly-anticipated debut album 'Mercurial World'.

Following up their latest EP 'A Little Rhythm and a Wicked Feeling', which was released right at the start of the global lockdown last March, the pair have clearly been hard at work ever since. Showcased by the stunning new single 'Chaeri', it feels like the pair have developed their sound into this world-building aura, creating a fresh and forward-thinking approach to the electro-pop direction.

Speaking about the new album, the band's Matthew Lewin said, “We spend all of our time together, and in some ways Mercurial World is about that particular sense of madness in containment. We live together and make art together; this immerses you in our creative, insular universe.”

While adding on the new single, “Chaeri muses on mental health, friendship, loneliness and control. It’s about the walls we put up and the walls we should tear down for the sake of authentic connection, and Mica’s own personal difficulties with that. We tried taking these themes and elevating them to build a big, dark world with unsettling undertones.”

Their debut album 'Mercurial World' is set to land on the 8th October via Luminelle, and you can check out the new video for 'Chaeri' in the player below.
