ARTIST OF THE WEEK: No.571 - Cello

Brighton-based newcomer Cello has released her debut single 'Vitamins', introducing a bold new voice in the UK’s alternative music scene.

Blending sharp humour with restless post-punk energy, 'Vitamins' delivers a hypnotic, chant-driven track that challenges modern expectations placed on women. Built around repetition and a deliberately deadpan vocal style, the song examines themes of productivity culture, wellness trends, and the invisible emotional and domestic labour often expected of women.

The lyrics unfold like a relentless to-do list, gradually building tension as everyday expectations pile up: from self-improvement and therapy to domestic duties and physical appearance. As the repeated refrain “Vitamins, vitamins, yeah yeah” echoes through the track, the line between empowerment and exhaustion becomes deliberately blurred, turning the language of self-care into something both absurd and revealing.

Cello’s musical background adds an intriguing dimension to her sound. Nicknamed after her classical training as a cellist at the Junior Royal College of Music in London, she has since pivoted toward stripped-back post-punk minimalism. While the instrumentation is raw and direct, that classical discipline remains evident in the song’s careful pacing, controlled repetition, and dramatic tension.

'Vitamins' serves as both a debut statement and a provocative introduction to Cello’s forthcoming album 'Kung Fu Disco'. With its mix of satire, confrontation, and sharp songwriting, the track signals the arrival of an artist unafraid to challenge expectations and spark conversation.
