Baba Ali - 'Laugh Like A Bomb'

When transcontinental duo Baba Ali delivered their breakthrough debut LP 'Memory Device' in 2021, their work with Hot Chip/LCD Soundsystem producer Al Doyle on the record was more than apparent. Developing more of that distinctive electro-punk aesthetic they had cultivated prior, the release cemented them as a forward-thinking entity on the new music scene that year. But now looking to self-produce their material this time around, the pair return with their eagerly-awaited sophomore album 'Laugh Like A Bomb', a record that brings a more intense atmosphere to the fold.

While much of their groove-filled textures remain in place throughout this new collection, 'Laugh Like A Bomb' has a grittier and more driven feel running through it. Bringing back more of that euphoric electronic energy they are known for, the full-length also has this wonderfully progressive direction to it, likening it to LCD Soundsystem's more sprawling works in places. Although it doesn't have that same initial impact 'Memory Device' came with, there are still plenty of moments that look to intrigue and fascinate throughout.

Baba Ali may still be one of the more underrated names on the scene right now, but 'Laugh Like A Bomb' shows that they are still brimming with fresh and explorative ideas at every turn. A solid return from a band who are all about breaking styles and conventions whenever they can.
