Band Of Horses - 'Things Are Great'

8/10

Since their incarnation almost two decades ago, Band Of Horses have cemented themselves as one of the more emotionally-charged indie-rock outfits working at the moment. With a broad and inventive aesthetic that allows frontman Ben Bridwell to bare his soul as often as possible, the band have been notorious in delivering some truly heartfelt and memorable offerings over the years. But with the departure of stalwart members Bill Reynolds and Tyler Ramsey since their last full-length 'Why Are You OK', they now look back to their roots on their sixth studio album 'Things Are Great', a record that is about returning to a simpler time.

While titled 'Things Are Great', there is clearly a level of crass sarcasm to that line as these songs are not the bright and peachy croons you would expect. It feels that searching your past for new inspiration has led them down a forlorn avenue, filled with heady dose of troubling and contemplative nostalgia. But despite its more sombre direction, there are still plenty of enticing moments layered throughout this new collection. With a raw and exposed intention running throughout, their newest offering makes for a refreshing listen that doubles down on their passionate guise as frequently as possible.

Band Of Horses may have gone through a touch of spiritual reconnection to their youth to produce this release, but 'Things Are Great' has still turned out the goods from start to finish. A wonderfully rich and admirable return that continues their legacy as one of the most compelling songwriters of today.
