Bright Eyes - 'Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was'

7/10

Usually when a band reforms after such a long break, there are normally two reasons why that occurs. First is obviously the financial factor, and the second is a way for them to revive their formative selves and pursue the collective dream they all had with their fans once again. But the return of Bright Eyes is thankfully neither of those things. While we can't be totally sure of the former reason, we know that this is not something the trio have done on a whim, but a record that they truly believe in. So after a nine-year hiatus, they deliver 'Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was', a full-length that sees them almost back to their best.

I say almost as the very best of Bright Eyes is one of the most untouchable periods in the band's career that even they would admit will probably never make it back to that zenith again. But 'Down In The Weeds, Where The World Once Was' certainly makes a challenge for that top-spot in their legacy as they bring their usual sweet and adventurous angles back to the plate. With frontman Conor Oberst seemingly picking back up almost exactly where they left off, this new collection is the strong and focused release that we were all hoping for, even if it doesn't quite hit a perfect shot every time.

Bright Eyes are still so appreciated the scene that the nine-year gap between albums almost feels like it never happened. But just a few tracks into this record, we are instantly transported back to when we first discovered their bold and enigmatic sound, giving this release a nostalgic reminder of just how enjoyable and captivating they can be.
