Carey Clayton - 'Idyll'

8/10

Over these last few years, US artist and producer Carey Clayton has established himself as one of the more prolific names doing the rounds. After making waves with a wondrous array of releases throughout last year, including his acclaimed full-length 'Headless', the months since have continued to be a busy and productive time for him, delivering something fresh and interesting to introduce to his direction. And with that wave of inspiration still yet to reach its crest, he delivers his latest studio album 'Idyll', a collection that hones his more adventurous side throughout.

While much of his material over the years has been hard to define or pigeonhole, 'Idyll' leans further into this inventive guise than ever before. Transporting us to a broad and psychedelic arena through wistful guitar playing and dreamlike production as often as possible, this eleven-track offering makes for a beautifully warm and inviting listen, capturing some brilliantly spellbinding moments as it plays. Harnessing the whimsical approach he has always pursued and adapting it to a progressive approach to songwriting, Clayton returns with some of his more endearing work to date here, building upon the foundations of his explorative nature so far.

What's most appealing about this release is its pace and movement. Usually artists in his field like to give a more self-indulgent approach to their compositions, whereas Clayton delivers just enough of each idea before moving onto the next, giving 'Idyll' this brilliantly lively feel that adds yet another immersive layer to his bustling catalogue to date.
