There is a noticeable difference between musicianship and identity. Plenty of artists can play beautifully, produce with precision or adapt themselves to somebody else’s vision. Far fewer can gather those abilities into a body of work that feels unmistakably their own. And on his debut solo EP 'Is Anything Real', CJ Sooy makes that transition with pure confidence.
The New Jersey-born, Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter arrives at this release after years spent building experience away from the centre of the frame. Session work, collaborative projects and studio roles have already established his technical range, but this EP is more interested in what happens when that craft is placed in service of a personal perspective.
Across the EP, he draws from alternative rock, acoustic songwriting and lightly psychedelic production without allowing any one influence to dominate. The arrangements carry the warmth of 90s guitar music, yet they are softened by a more introspective atmosphere. Melodies drift, guitars shimmer and occasional moments of strangeness keep the songs from settling into predictable patterns.
And his vocal approach is central to that direction. There are moments of warmth, unease and self-questioning throughout, often appearing within the same phrase; giving these songs an emotional flexibility that prevents the EP's reflective qualities from becoming too static as it plays.
But what makes 'Is Anything Real' an effective debut is that it doesn't sound like an artist trying to prove everything at once. The technical ability is evident, but it remains secondary to atmosphere, songwriting and intent. The frontman understands when to let a passage unfold, when to leave space around a vocal and when an unexpected texture can shift the emotional meaning of a song.
As a first release under his own name, the EP feels assured without pretending to be definitive. It introduces an artist whose experience is already extensive, but whose solo identity still carries the excitement of discovery. 'Is Anything Real' is thoughtful, melodic and gently unpredictable; offering a promising opening statement from a musician who sounds ready to be recognised for more than the work he has done behind the scenes.
CJ Sooy's debut EP 'Is Anything Real' will be available to stream from the 7th August.
