Crash & The Crapenters - 'Species Du Faeces'

8/10

Over these last few years, Sydney-based outfit Crash & The Crapenters have been on a mission to bring back the core sound of punk rock for a new generation. Tastefully described as “If Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins and Bob Marley ejaculated into a petri dish, the contents of which was used to artificially inseminate Patti Smith”, the band have been quick to cement their status as one of the more uncompromising additions to today's scene. And with that buzz surrounding them continuing to grow, they are back once again to deliver their new EP 'Species Du Faeces', a collection that finds them in a more explorative guise.

While much of their tenure to date has focused on a blistering punk-inspired dynamic, 'Species Du Faeces' is projecting itself as a more varied affair. While its opener 'All Geared Up' is balls-to-the-wall energy, the next outing 'Depression (Smells Like Middle Aged Spirit)' is a more atmospheric and subdued effort, honing an almost satirical take on the grunge sound. But despite its more diverse direction, Crash & The Crapenters still manage to pack this release with plenty of fresh and innovative ideas, something they've never been short on over their tenure so far.

While it has certainly been a busy and productive time for them lately, 'Species Du Faeces' proves they are still ready and willing to adopt something new to their aesthetic. Brimming with this adventurous spirit across all four tracks, they remain one of the more exciting names rising through the ranks right now.
