Cults - 'Host'

7/10

After first emerging back in 2011 with their self-titled debut album, Cults quickly cemented themselves as one of the United States' most captivating and intrinsic outfits of the time. With their bold and vivid imagery wrapped tightly around a web of sweeping yet haunting offerings, they quickly became known as a go-to duo for bold and enticing releases. And after a few years away from the limelight, they now return with their fourth full-length 'Host', a record that sees them turn a corner and create more of a home within a sweeter direction.

What is most notable on this new collection is how easily they have managed to pursue an avenue that feels much like their older material, but is distinctly more uplifting in its intentions. While there are still the odd glimmers of darkness running through this new record, 'Host' is a much brighter and more upbeat offering for the largest part. Maintaining their solid base for rich and diverse soundscapes, the general tone of this album feels lighter than their previous records, showing that they are on the cusp of something new and exciting that works well in measured amounts.

It may not be the return that their fans were expecting, but it shows that Cults are far from low on ideas and have almost been reborn on 'Host'. It has this incredibly easygoing vibe running throughout it, making for an incredible breezy listen that is always looking to better itself on every turn.
