The Cumberland River Project - 'Meet Me In The Rain'

7/10

Some musical journeys begin early in life, while others unfold later, when experience has deepened every story waiting to be told. And with 'Meet Me In The Rain', singer-songwriter Frank Renfordt, the creative force behind The Cumberland River Project, offers a moving reminder that artistic reinvention can arrive at any stage, and sometimes the songs that come later carry the most emotional weight.

Now in his sixties, Renfordt has embraced songwriting with the determination of someone making up for lost time. Originally from Germany but deeply inspired by American roots traditions, he has built a body of work that reflects his admiration for storytelling-driven music. And this latest EP continues that journey with a collection of songs steeped in warmth, reflection, and quiet honesty.

Across the release, he handles a remarkable portion of the instrumentation himself, performing acoustic and baritone guitars alongside bass, mandolin, keyboards, and programmed percussion. The result is a project that feels deeply personal, as each arrangement is carefully shaped, allowing the songs themselves to remain the centre of attention.

The EP’s atmosphere shifts between light-hearted moments and introspective reflection. Some tracks carry an easygoing charm, evoking images of long drives and open skies, while others lean into more contemplative moods. Together, they form a thoughtful meditation on time passing, relationships, and the emotional landscapes we navigate as we grow older.

Supporting musicians bring additional colour to the collection. Jessie Morgan’s harmony vocals and expressive fiddle playing add a graceful emotional layer, while Neemias Teixeira’s piano lines introduce subtle melodic flourishes. Meanwhile, Aaron Fabbrini’s pedal steel guitar provides that unmistakable roots music texture to make it warm, nostalgic, and quietly stirring.

With 'Meet Me In The Rain', The Cumberland River Project proves that passion and creativity are not bound by age or geography. It’s a heartfelt offering that celebrates storytelling, resilience, and the enduring power of music to capture life’s quietest moments.
