Dam-Funk - 'Invite The Light'

7/10

While the California-based producer has been a prominent part of the funk community for the last decade, it was his 2013 collaboration with Snoop Dogg (credited as Snoopzilla) on the album '7 Days Of Funk' that brought him to the attention of music fans around the world. Now releasing his first full-length since then, it is clear that Dam-Funk has not been suffering from writers block in the last two years.

The epic 96-minute record 'Invite The Light' is definitely one of the most overwhelming albums we have heard this year. Aiming at fusing together funk and all its distant cousins like hip-hop, disco and house onto one continuous record makes it almost impossible to describe in words. Keeping a more somber side to the genre, the album keeps a good pace and flow, allowing the producer to really stretch his capabilities from time to time.

With its incredible length, there is little doubt you won't find something to enjoy on here. It has this mission to cram as much of the genre into one single release as possible, and the result is an incredibly varied and diverse album, something you aren't likely to find anywhere else soon.
