At The Drive In - 'in•ter a•li•a'

7/10

We've certainly seen our fair share of comebacks so far this year, but this is one that no-one was expecting to see. Having not released a studio album since the year 2000 and a brief reunion five years back, At The Drive In have fully returned with their fourth full-length 'in•ter a•li•a', a record that is hard to pronounce but considering their reputation, not that difficult to understand.

During their heyday, At The Drive In were one of many post-hardcore bands looking to venture into new territory as far as the rock scene was concerned. Mixing up time signatures and tempos to create a sound that was loved by some, but left the commercial scene in a state of befuddlement. Yet 'in•ter a•li•a' sees them take on a far easier to digest sound, sticking mainly with a riff-heavy direction that aims to create an explosive release from start to finish.

I guess in the time that has passed since their initial formation, At The Drive In's influence has permeated much of the modern rock sound and therefore sounds more contemporary than they have in the past. Either way, it is still a solid return. Not really much in the way of a standout release, but still something worth getting into.
