Eagulls - 'Ullages'

5/10

After the mixed opinion that their self-titled debut album received back in 2014, Eagulls have now returned with an equally divisive new release. Much like their first full-length, 'Ullages' takes influence from 80s post-punk outfits like Joy Division and The Smiths to deliver a snapshot of the more underwhelmed side of the indie scene.

With the Robert Smith like vocals from frontman George Mitchell, the album is instantly intrenched in this sense of melancholy and despair from the start. While that is obviously the direction that they are looking to go into, it does make it difficult to distinguish one track from the next in terms of intentions. As it plays, it slowly begins to turn into one long tunnel of depression, which makes it hard to come away from it feeling impressed.

While it does have some great moments, it is let down by its lack of variety within the songwriting. Once you've heard the first few tracks, there isn't really much to get excited about after then, as 'Ullages' just seems to disappear into itself by the end.
