Eels - 'Extreme Witchcraft'

8/10

After nearly three decades as one of the world's most influential outfits, Eels have been moving through a state of flux in recent years. While originally making their name with despondent lyrics and driven indie-rock grooves, the group began to find themselves slowing down musically in their latter era, opting for more sombre and easygoing offerings. But it feels like they are ready to get back to their roots once again as they unveil their fourteenth studio album 'Extreme Witchcraft', a record that sees them return to the grizzled hooks and vibrant energy of their infancy.

From the very start, 'Extreme Witchcraft' makes itself known as a more robust moment in the current Eels catalogue. Moving away from the piano-led compositions that filled their 2020 effort 'Earth To Dora', this new collection feels like we are seeing a rebirth of their classic sound. While still very much appealing to a modern and contemporary ear throughout, there is something warming and inviting about this new full-length. It is as if the band found themselves slipping and have shunted themselves back into their old ways as if nothing had happened at all.

If this is a return to the classic Eels sound, then we are certainly all for it. 'Extreme Witchcraft' delivers a bold and heady dose of bluesy hooks, married perfectly with Mr. E's distinctive vocal snarl. This definitely feels like the comeback record all Eels have been waiting for.
