Fickle Friends - 'You Are Someone Else'

6/10

Over the last few years, we have heard nothing but buzz about Brighton-based electro-poppers Fickle Friends. With a catalogue that goes back as far as 2014, this debut album has certainly been a long time in the making. But while fans of the band will be familiar with most of the tracks on this release, those new to the band will be surprised to find a wealth of great pop records on here as they look to introduce themselves to the commercial scene.

From the start, 'You Are Someone Else' looks to staple itself as an alternative to the over-produced pop sound of today. Taking inspiration from The 1975 and Paramore, the band are looking to add a bit more bite to their direction on each and every track. Singles like 'Swim' and 'Glue' stand out with their retro 80s approach to production, but from there, the record does find itself faltering from time to time.

A great release in the beginning but the second half of the album does contain far too much filler for a debut. This is likely down to the broad timeline that these singles were released but it doesn't gel like you think it would. A confident start but one that needed more inspired additions.
