Flat Moon - 'Cookin' Up A Groove'

7/10

For their long-awaited debut album 'Cookin’ Up a Groove', six-piece collective Flat Moon deliver a technicolour explosion of rhythm, personality, and unfiltered imagination. It’s the sound of a band who refuse to pick a lane because they’re too busy bulldozing the path and building a neon-lit theme park on top of it.

Across the record’s sprawling palette, Flat Moon treat genre like a playground slide: something to climb, twist, leap from, and hit the ground running. Funk collides with punk. Jazz waltzes into psychedelia. Hip-hop swagger rubs shoulders with Latin fire. Afrobeat pulses underneath riffs so big they practically wink at you. Every track feels like a portal into a new room of the same chaotic house; familiar yet completely unpredictable.

But what makes 'Cookin’ Up a Groove' truly addictive is the way it bottles the band’s live-wire energy. You can practically see the sweat flying off the sax, feel the guitar licking the edges of collapse, and hear the rhythm section grinning as they push the tempo somewhere slightly unhinged. This is a band who love to egg each other on, daring the music to get stranger, louder, and sharper.

Lyrically, the album dances between internal storms and ecstatic breakthroughs. There’s anxiety, insomnia, sensory overload, then, just as suddenly, triumph, clarity, and joy. Flat Moon throw the human experience under a strobe light and let it move. It’s messy and honest and unexpectedly uplifting.

'Cookin’ Up a Groove' is wild, weird, and wonderfully alive. It’s the kind of debut that opens a door to their universe and shoves you inside If you’ve ever wanted music that makes you dance, think, laugh, and question your own heartbeat rhythm all at once, Flat Moon have got the stove hot and the party waiting.
