Flyte - 'This is Really Going To Hurt'

6/10

After making a huge impression with their much-loved debut album 'The Loved Ones' in 2017, London-based trio Flyte were certainly ready to take on the world. With plenty of buzz and acclaim coming in for that release, the band took on the world and came back stronger and more refined than ever. But then frontman Will Taylor ended up going through probably the hardest breakup of his life, so rather than continue on the path they were destined for, they return with a collection filled with heartbreak and sorrow that feels like a very different group at the helm.

It is no secret that the ending of a relationship can spur songwriters to create some of the most world-changing cuts of their careers, but in the case of Flyte, it isn't so much about using the pain for musical inspiration, but simply vent frustrations and give Taylor a chance to heal. Which is probably why 'This Is Really Going To Hurt' comes across more self-indulgent than their first effort, as he looks to create a soundtrack for the recently brokenhearted and let these raw and passionate emotions flow out of him in any fashion he sees fit.

While it is not a terrible return for the group, 'This Is Really Going To Hurt' does have trouble keeping its head above water at times. The ideas and influences show glimmers of great promise on here, but it seems to lack those truly euphoric moments that they developed a reputation for the first time around.
