Getting To Know... ANDRÆ

After following up his much-loved 2023 EP 'I'm killing all my plants' with the stunning comeback single 'I gave birth to myself' earlier this year, Belgian artist and producer ANDRÆ is back once again to deliver his vibrant new offering 'Failure'.

Capturing more of that rich and enigmatic electro-pop aesthetic he has been cultivating for himself over the years, 'Failure' makes for a brilliantly broad and immersive listen. With his breathtaking vocals spread across a dynamic production throughout, he continues his ascent as one of the more impactful names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I became completely obsessed with piano around the age of 12, so I started learning by myself, trying to play some pieces by ear.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Every piano piece from the movie ‘Amelie’, I used to play them over and over, which drove a lot of people crazy.

What was the first album you remember owning?

It probably was Craig David’s album ‘Born To Do It’, and I have to admit, I occasionally still listen to it. It does have some really catchy tunes.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

I kind of wish I had written and produced Retrograde by James Blake.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I used to drink a lot of coffee until my brain exploded, then I would start writing/producing with adrenaline. Now it depends. I enjoy writing songs when travelling, often in the daytime. And I usually produce them at night.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I have found the London based artist SØLV on tiktok, who I have been listening to on a loop all of 2023. There also are Fredwave, Yaeger, Saya Gray…

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Either James Blake or Grimes.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Everytime I make a song, I get to create another planet in my own universe. Possibilities are endless.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Having to promote yourself as an indie artist can be tough, finding the right way to market your music is key to success, yet this isn’t what artists are built for.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

If you love it to the point of not wanting to do anything else, then you shouldn’t do anything else.
