Getting To Know... Canada Hill

Ripping through the noise with jangling guitars, cheeky charm, and a healthy dose of Redhill swagger, Canada Hill are fast becoming one of the UK’s most exciting indie rock prospects. Their latest single 'Little Maisonette' is a punchy, power-pop-infused gem that channels the warmth of sixties beat bands with the raw, rhythmic bite of late-2000s indie.

Formed in Redhill and known for their explosive live sets, tight vocal interplay, and affection for all things British and bittersweet, the trio bring a refreshingly grounded perspective to modern indie. 'Little Maisonette' spins a daydream of simpler times, all wrapped in playful guitar hooks and a chorus built to shake ceilings.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The electric guitar. I visited The Beatles museum in Liverpool and was entranced by the sound of the guitar that was coming out of the speakers in the mock up cavern.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Before the Beatles, it was the pop music of the time. But when I discovered the Beatles as a young teenager, it changed my musical taste forever.

What was the first album you remember owning?

With The Beatles. I remember thinking the cover looked so cool to me, and it sounded fantastic, too. Such energy in the songs.

What is the one song you wish you could have written yourself?

One After 909 - The Beatles. Not an obvious choice but it just sums up the rock n roll sound of the 60s to me and I love it for that.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I like to be in particular places, be it at the top of the stairs in a landing or in a small storage room in the studio. Certain places just sound and feel right to create music in.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Not meaning to exclusively talk about the Beatles, but I have very recently rediscovered my love of the Plastic Ono Band album by John Lennon. So many great tunes on there that I had forgotten about for a number of years. A real earthy, raw sound.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

The Hives, the forefathers of the 2000s indie movement and brilliant live energy. What’s not to like?

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The creative outlet. Being able to get things off your chest in a way that is both liberating and fun is a great form of therapy, I think.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not having enough time to do everything I want to do. Between working full-time and the bare necessities of life, it leaves little time for music.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Be yourself. No one else can do it.
