What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Piano, I grew up taking lessons and I’ve always loved the soulful tone it brings to any piece.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
I loved Barbie princess tunes, Disney princess music, but most of all I loved pop. I distinctly remember listening to Taylor Swifts, 1989 album on repeat. It has always been my favourite album.
What was the first album you remember owning?
1989 by Taylor Swift. I had it as a CD but also I played it through my ipod touch. Those songs hold such a grip on me even till this day. The best part was my mom taking me to a 1989 concert when I was 10. I still remember being in awe of the atmosphere and Taylor’s performance.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
If I’m being honest, I don’t think I have one. I associate songs with the artist heavily, and I don’t know if I could imagine myself writing them.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
A huge habit of mine is recording voice memos of melodies or even lyrics. For some reason, in public places I get ideas a lot of the time and I huddle in a corner and sing into my phone to listen to later. I probably look very suspicious haha.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I really love Melanie Martinez’s unique sound and how she takes unconventional elements and uses them in her music. I’ve loved her album Cry Baby for a long time, and I still love listening to those songs for inspiration and for fun.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
So many it’s hard to choose. Artists like Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and Sabrina Carpenter are a few of my favorite touring artists. I would love to channel their vibe while being myself and hyping a crowd up.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
The most rewarding part for me is when small ideas become songs or are transformed into something even better. I love the creative process of building a song from a single line or even a title. It’s so rewarding and satisfying to put so much care and attention to detail in a song and have it become something you love.
And what is the most frustrating part?
For me, the most frustrating part is the self-doubt and comparison. I am constantly comparing myself to other people my age and other artists, and it gets extremely overwhelming sometimes. I know I am so hard and critical of myself, and I want to get better at being proud and cheering myself on.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Being authentic to yourself and your music. I always want to remember who I am, what I believe, and never sacrifice my sound or what I bring to the table. I know every musician brings something unique to the table, and I want to make sure I always put on music that I love first and foremost.
