Getting To Know... Coastal Fire Dept.

After generating a huge amount of buzz for their recently shared offerings, Guernsey-based outfit Coastal Fire Dept. have now returned with their latest soaring single 'What Do I'.

Channelling a broad and euphoric alt-rock direction from start to finish, 'What Do I' makes for a wonderfully powerful and uplifting return. Jam-packed with vibrant textures, killer hooks, and a captivating chorus to boot, these guys are certainly heading in the right direction on this one.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with Ollie Goddard from the band to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Got to be guitar! Don’t know why…I was attracted to guitar driven music and guitars in general!

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

When I was very young I was into two tone and indie rock.

What was the first album you remember owning?

That’s a hard one! Probably Adam & the Ants’ ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ although I did hassle my mum to let me buy The Clash’s ‘London Calling’ (she wouldn’t let me!).

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

That’s a difficult one…there’s so much to go for! Ride’s ‘Vapour Trail’ is an absolute banger…that would be a good one!

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I don’t really have any habits. I just sit down with an acoustic guitar and see what comes out…sometimes whilst in front of the TV or whilst nursing a hangover!

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Recently I’ve been listening to alot of Balance and Composure, Title Fight, Superheaven, Violent Soho, Waax & Bully.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

That’s easy…Violent Soho! They’ve got a great set of songs and look awesome live. Bob & I were supposed to see them in London last year and then COVID hit!

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The occasional nice comment or feedback about our music is nice especially if it’s from someone I don’t know.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Sometimes it’s hard to get our music sounding in the studio as it sounds in my head! But then someone in the band or Mikey, who we record with, comes up with something better!

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Back in the 90s I had a music lawyer advising me who put me off becoming involved with a major label. He talked about how difficult the industry is and how I will get ripped off…so I chose not to do it!
