Getting To Know... The Crooked 45

Following up a string of praise from the likes of BBC Radio, BBC Introducing, and Total Rock for their previous efforts, Reading-based outfit The Crooked 45 have now returned to deliver their blistering new single 'Why Are You Complaining?'

Channelling a bold and pulsing alt-rock aesthetic from start to finish, 'Why Are You Complaining?' sees the three-piece return in vibrant form. Jam-packed with energetic hooks, a driven pace, and powerful vocals throughout, these guys look set to be breaking through to the big time any day now.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with drummer Sam Cooper Harris to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I fell in love with was the guitar but the first instrument I actually properly learnt was drums.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I guess I loved everything because everything inspired me. But the dominant genres were punk, metal and rap.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I ever bought with my own money was "Bat Out Of Hell" by Meat Loaf when I was like six. I would say I was embarrassed by that but have you heard the hooks on that thing!?

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

"With Or Without You" by U2. The song has four chords and puts the globe to their knees.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Not really. I play it out in my head. Being one of those annoying multi-instrument people, I hear every instrument in my head at the same time and make it up as I go along. Luckily something that I love comes out.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I'm shamefully not really into new music as much. I do like some but not a lot. But Sex Pistols, 2pac and The Smiths have been on repeat recently.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Nirvana, but that isn't going to happen any time soon.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Moving people with the stuff art I make.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Tuning instruments.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

"Always remember to bury them on top of endangered plants".
