What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Definitely the piano. We have always had a grand piano in the center of our house. Some of my youngest memories involve my dad playing it.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
I grew up in a house filled with music, so I listened to lots of different things. I loved funk and 70s music like Earth, Wind, and Fire and Donna Summer. I also loved Michael Jackson and was a huge Hannah Montana fan.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. I made my mom watch way too many heart-felt self-choreographed dance performances to Firework.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
While My Guitar Gently Weeps by the Beatles
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Truthfully, my songwriting habits can be pretty sporadic. Sometimes, I have a specific emotion or story I want to get off my chest. Other times, I find myself looking around the room until I find an object that reminds me of something and take inspiration from it.
Who are your favorite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Noga Erez, AURORA, and Hozier.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Billie Eilish
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
I love to see people connect with my music. When I perform, the audience and I have a shared experience. It’s incredibly meaningful to have people listen to, enjoy, and find meaning in the music I create.
And what is the most frustrating part?
I love to sing, but It’s frustrating sometimes that my voice is my instrument. I always want to perform to the best of my ability, but when I’m under the weather, it can be vocally challenging to do so.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
If you’re having a good time on stage, then the people watching will also have a good time.
