Getting To Know... EMERG

Every band has that defining moment, when the dream shifts from imagination to momentum, and ambition finally begins to outweigh fear. For Niagara-based four-piece EMERG, that moment sounds like 'Star Song'. Bold, soaring, and unmistakably heartfelt, the track captures the very edge of something big, the spark that comes just before the fire.

At just under 20 years old, EMERG already carry the weight and wonder of a band twice their age. With a debut album (Anemoia – Vol II), an EP (Vol I), and now a string of singles that reject linear storytelling in favour of raw, evolving honesty, they’re carving their place in Canada’s modern rock landscape with both grit and grace. 'Star Song', written through late-night jam sessions and live experimentation, is their most telling work yet, a love letter to big dreams and the effort it takes to chase them.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

All of our first instruments, the ones we initially fell in love with, are the same ones we play in the band today. Some things never change. From the very beginning, each of us was captivated by the instrument we now call our own. We’ve each formed our own lifelong romances with what we play now, and remain deeply passionate about it.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

We all grew up on classic rock and glam rock. Some of the artists that shaped us early on include The Beatles, David Bowie, Genesis, AC/DC, and Poison. These were the entry-level, mainstream bands that introduced us to rock music before our tastes evolved into something more defined, articulate, and “aristocratic.”

What was the first album you remember owning?

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, Queen - A Night At The Opera, Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet and The Beatles - Abbey Road

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

The Glorious Sons - S.O.S, Rush - Subdivisions, Panama - Van Halen and Oasis - Supersonic

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Some of us listen and sift through new and old music trying to draw inspiration where some of us find inspiration in the more lively things like going for walks in nature and meditating in deep thought hoping something speaks to us. Over everything, our process is very natural and sporadic. We sit in a room and let things happen, nothing is ever forced.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Genesis, The Glorious Sons, Mötley Crue, and Incubus

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

The Glorious Sons or Greta Van Fleet

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Giving back to our community and making a difference is important to us. We are deeply enthusiastic about what we do and the music we create, and with that enthusiasm comes a sense of responsibility. We hope to pass that energy on and inspire others with our passion and love for what we do. If we can share even a small part of that, it’s something we truly strive for.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Writer’s block and, of course, the occasional disagreement can be challenging. Stepping away for a breath of fresh air and returning to the work later has done wonders for us, especially when frustration starts to take over during the writing process.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Simply being persistent and voraciously hungry to do more, learn more, and play more. We’re gluttons for playing, with an appetite that won’t quit. We encourage everyone to approach music with that same mindset. Always stay curious, stay hungry, have fun, and remain passionate about your craft. Love what you do.
