What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I started having piano lessons when I was 8, which I really enjoyed, but everything truly fell into place when I started having singing lessons! I felt like I could get so many feelings out through the words and melodies. I never looked back after that…

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I grew up on quite a mix of genres. I was influenced by my family listening to Latin music, Calypso & Soca, 2000s R&B, Jazz and a lot of Classical music.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first CD I remember having was ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ by Rihanna. Or ‘Confessions’ by Usher. I definitely sang every word with confidence without realising what I was singing about at all… Quite worrying when I think about it. But I still love those albums today.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

‘Tears Dry On Their Own’ by Amy Winehouse. One of my favourites.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Usually, if I’m writing on my own in my room, I’ve got to light candles and make the room look nice. You know what they say, ‘tidy room, tidy mind’. That seems to help the process.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Currently, I’m really loving Ama Lou and Daniel Caesar. Both of their most recent albums are on repeat for me!

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

My dream support slot would be for Billie Eilish. Manifesting that constantly…

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I think the feeling at the end of a session when I’ve written a song with someone else and we’re both really excited about it. Blasting it through the speakers and feeling excited and proud and full of possibilities. Creating something new that you’d add to your own playlist immediately. It’s the best energy.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Sometimes I can get stuck in the mindset of worrying about numbers, engagement and streams but what actually matters to me is the music and the creativity. I have to remind myself that it’s not what I started writing for, because music began as my form of expression & therapy. Musicians shouldn’t have to rely on the validation of others to be happy with their music! It’s important to pull yourself out of that closed mindset if you’re stuck in it.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

That’s a difficult question because I feel like I’m constantly learning new things about the industry, but I think overall it’s a piece of advice from my Dad, who said that you should always strive to do what makes you happy at the end of the day. I think I carry that throughout my career in order to make decisions. If it’s hard work then that’s fine (I live off that) but overall, I won’t do work that makes me unhappy.
