Getting To Know... Joey Collins

With the likes of 6Music and BBC Introducing praising his work so far, fast-rising singer-songwriter Joey Collins returns once again to offer up his mesmerising new single 'Time Becomes Our Only Saviour'.

Lifted from his forthcoming debut album 'Yin-Yang', which is set to land on the 24th March, 'Time Becomes Our Only Saviour' makes for a wonderfully rich and euphoric listen. Channelling more of that broad and driven indie-rock direction he is known for, he is certainly one to keep a firm eye on for the future as well.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Bass guitar! My dad played bass a lot when I'd visit him at the weekend in Wales around the time I was 7 or 8 years old. It was the first instrument I learned and he taught me a little bit of how to play some of my favourite Chili Peppers songs such as Soul To Squeeze.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Always been into my rock mostly! Generally speaking I love all kinds of music though. I was raised on a real mixture from rock, blues, world, reggae, Irish singer-songwriters, folk and metal.

What was the first album you remember owning?

It was highly likely to be one of those late 90's or early 2000s pop/disco compilation albums. I remember track 19 on it was my favourite song as a kid, Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) and I'd listen to it on repeat! What a bop!

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Jeff Buckley - Grace

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I usually set my ambient lights in the studio so it's all vibey and make a cuppa. With regards to writing music, I try not to go into a writing/recording session with too much of a preconceived concept for how the song should be. Just let it happen!

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Dinosaur Pile-Up, Tamino, Deaf Havana, Enter Shikari, Jimmy Eat World, Deftones and Nothing But Thieves to name a few.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Incubus

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Being able to (hopefully) facilitate an escape from the struggles of life for people or create an emotion through sounds and lyrics.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Being broke ALL THE TIME and a little broken, but that makes good art ay?

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Sign up for PRS! If you're a musician and aren't, you really need to!
