Getting To Know... KHOUBA

With a sound that looks to take influence from the worlds of afrobeats, dancehall and rap, Paris-based MC KHOUBA now returns with his latest bounce 'Jonah Hill'.

Filled with bold and thunderous production, 'Jonah Hill' makes for a fresh and enticing return for the artist. With nods to numerous genres all mashed together here, his latest single will be setting dancefloors on fire as soon as the clubs reopen.

So with his new track doing the rounds right now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I started music by playing the guitar. Funny story I picked it up because I’ve seen this one kid getting every girl with his guitar. So I was like hell yeah, I could do that too.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

Tha Carter III by Lil Wayne has been my biggest inspiration and the driving force behind my music.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

Growing up I loved everything from Michael Jackson and RnB acts like Chris Brown, Aaliyah, Usher to Rock Music with bands like Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin and of Course Rap Music with the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne, Drake, Gucci Mane, TI and Biggie.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

'A Millie' by Lil Wayne from his “Tha Carter III” was the changing moment for me. I was like 10-11 years old and realized that this is the life that I want to pursue. I want to tell my life through music.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

At the moment, my go to artists are : Roddy Ricch, NBA YoungBoy, Polo G, Lil TJay, Burna Boy and French Rappers like Jul, Dinos, 13 Block and Hamza.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

I can’t give you a number, a lot of my music has been inspired by people that I hang out with whether their impact is positive or negative.

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

The most unusual one must be the first time someone sent me a video vibing and knowing my lyrics. That was like an Out Of the body experience.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

Outside of music, my biggest passion is cinematography. I love movies and tv shows and I give a big importance to my music video which I write most of and co direct.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Honestly I don’t know. I can’t imagine doing something outside of the music world. So I guess I’ll be doing something creative.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

Believe in yourself and Go for it. Honestly you can always push back and have some doubts but as long as you don’t do it you’ll never know what could happen. Box all your doubts and all the people that’ll tell you no in a small place and go for it, give it all you got.
