Getting To Know... Kinships

After delivering a broad and explorative array of delights these last few years, Northampton-based outfit Kinships have now returned with their rousing new single 'Reform'.

Channelling the same warm and ethereal direction as acts like The xx and London Grammar, 'Reform' makes for a wonderfully vivid listen from start to finish. Filled with vibrant textures, breezy production, and a soaring atmosphere throughout, we can definitely expect to hear a lot more from this lot in the months to come.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Guitar - taught myself to play to various records and picked up keys and drums and other things from there.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Grew up with records by Radiohead - Ok Computer and Kid A changed my life and opened my mind to other music like DJ Shadow, Aphex Twin and other electronic stuff, such advanced records that still have a unique freshness to them. Also loved Massive Attack and Four Tet and Burial.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Cannot remember this one but I remember trying to put vinyl on and having all sorts of horrid needle noises as a real young kid.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Has to be Let Down by Radiohead - perfection from start to finish.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Not really… Maybe I like to get a pool of samples and sounds together to form a “pallet” to draw from…

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Really enjoying Art School Girlfriends new record - Is It Light Where You Are… Great tunes! Really loving Sault as well - amazing music.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Saw Caribou last week in Manchester - brilliant, would love a gig supporting them.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Meeting other artists and as a producer, working with different musicians and opening up to different genres.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Finishing music off - I think a lot of people have this problem!

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Never stop listening and learning.
