Getting To Know... Primary Delusion

After following up their much-loved debut EP with a string of shimmering delights these last few months, fast-rising outfit Primary Delusion are back on the grind once again as they deliver their sweeping new single 'Beyond The Blue'.

Capturing more of that rich and effervescent post-punk-inspired aesthetic they are known for, 'Beyond Of Blue' makes for a rousing return to form for the group. With such a bright and dreamy approach to their direction throughout, they are definitely ones to keep a firm eye on for the months ahead as well.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with bandleader Velde Vainio to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I guess drums, rhythm. Like many kids, I wanted a drum kit but perhaps understandably never got one. Then guitar, I suppose. But if I think about what catches my attention, it’s typically a good beat with a good bass line.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

All kinds, but I guess Rock music and its origins and variations. The 80s were important, I remember being influenced by a lot of the music videos I saw on the cable channel Music Box, and, of course MTV. From The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees to all the way to earlier hip hop like Eric B. and Rakim.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I didn’t own any albums growing up. I remember listening to my sister’s K-tel Double Dancing LPs as a kid. Later, I used to mainly borrow CDs from the library. All kinds of stuff, from The Clash and The Doors to classical music, to rhythm and blues like Howling Wolf.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Oh wow... That's impossible to say. Is it something like ‘Imagine’ or ‘In my life’ by Lennon, or ‘Yesterday’ by McCartney, or ‘Heroes’ by Bowie, or ‘Good vibrations’ by Brian Wilson? Or ‘Gimme shelter’ by the Stones or ‘Love will tear us apart’ by Joy Division? Or ‘Surfin bird‘ by The Trashmen, ripping off those Rivingtons songs? All great songs. And all probably recycling what sounds best in music.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I go for walks, humming the songs in my head, or listen to the demo while walking. Sometimes I start to hear things that are not there but maybe should be. After working on a song for a while, you sort of get ‘deaf’ to it, so I try to leave it for a while, but I also sometimes listen to it as the ‘chipmunks’ version, like 2x the speed, or super slow, to see if I can spot something new in its sound or arrangement.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I tend to not listen to so much music when I’m making it. But I suppose some of the latest artists that I have listened to, in no particular order are: Palace, Men I Trust, and Wine Pride.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Interesting… Maybe Echo & the Bunnymen. Or Interpol.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Creating music. Expressing what you can’t quite capture in other art forms. And especially as an indie artist, getting to do so many aspects of ‘being a musician’.

And what is the most frustrating part?

When you feel that the music you are making is both really good, and not good at all. And sometimes getting lost in the process, not knowing when to stop.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Believe in yourself and what you are doing. And keep doing it. Nothing happens otherwise.
