Getting To Know... The Sea Suns

After delivering a string of smooth and enticing cuts throughout the year so far, US duo The Sea Suns return once again with their latest intoxicating groove 'Fanatic'.

Capturing a warm and sweeping synth-pop aesthetic from start to finish, 'Fanatic' makes for a wonderfully rich return for the pair. Jam-packed with pulsing textures, killer hooks, and some beautifully woozy vocals throughout, it already feels like we'll be hearing a lot more from these two in the months to come.

So with their new single out now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Will: Guitar.

Marina: Piano.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Will: I loved all genres and couldn’t wait to discover something I’d never heard before. Top 40, Grunge, Hip Hop, Metal, Rock, and Blues where always favourites.

Marina: When I was younger I listened to all kinds of music too. My late father was a blues/jazz musician while my mom plays folk and had a DJ company so I was surrounded by literally every kind of music except maybe country. As a teenage girl I loved pop, hip hop, rock and r&b music.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Will: The first album (tape) I owned was L.L. Cool J’s “I’m Bad”.

Marina: I think the first album I ever owned was “Robyn is Here” by Robyn.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Will: “All I Need” by Radiohead.

Marina: Oooo that’s a hard question. “Lover You Should’ve Come Over” By Jeff Buckley. Either that or “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Will: I wouldn’t say that I have any habits or rituals but I always look for a certain feeling that I get in the early stages of a song idea that tells me that it’s worth exploring more.

Marina: My voice memo app basically rules my life - I made a pact to myself a few years ago to always record any melodies or lyrics no matter what. Even if I don’t think the idea is good, even if it’s the middle of the night when I’m half asleep or if I need to run out of the room quickly to record something when I’m with friends. It’s rude I know!! But I joke that I work for the ideas, haha.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Will: I’ve been listening to a lot of The Seshen and Diamond Thug.

Marina: I’ve been really loving King Princess and H.E.R.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Will: I would hop in my time machine and open up for Jeff Buckley.

Marina: Ooo that’s a good question… I would also join the time machine if I could to open for Jeff Buckley—what an incredible artist. If I were choosing someone around today I’d love to open for Halsey. She’s an incredibly inspiring songwriter and artist.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Will: Being able to create music to express oneself in ways that normal communication doesn’t allow is a gift like no other.

Marina: Being able to create something out of nothing is pure magic to me…and also using that expression or creation to release something I’m feeling or processing emotionally while sharing that with others as a form of connection.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Will: Navigating the waves of minimal return from a large investment can be frustrating at times. Then you remind yourself of the most rewarding part and it’s back to smooth sailing.

Marina: Navigating the social media/tech aspect of it. There’s so many different areas to juggle in promotion... we really have to wear so many different hats and it can get overwhelming. It’s very rewarding as a platform to connect with others and share, but sometimes it would be nice to imagine that making the music and performing it was our only job, haha.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Will: Write from the heart.

Marina: Tell the truth when you’re writing, and sing the truth on stage.
