Getting To Know... Sterling Press

After spending the last few months developing and cultivating their sound, London-based outfit Sterling Press are now ready to introduce themselves to the world as they unveil their debut single 'Very Fun Times'.

Taking their cues from the fun and energetic indie-rock sound of the noughties heyday, 'Very Fun Times' makes for an enjoyable introduction to their sound. Filled with anthemic hooks, killer riffs, and a catchy chorus to boot, expect to hear a lot more from these guys in the months to come.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

ED: We’ve all been messing around on the guitar/drums since we were in high school. Marlon didn't play bass until we started the band but for me and Greg the lead guitar stuff on the early Beatles records was certainly something we looked up to.

LUCIEN: I started playing bass before playing drums but never fell in love with it which is a shame. I love fat bass lines.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

GREG: Half of us are still teenagers but when we were about 15 we used to cover songs off the first couple Green Day Albums. We also used to look up to the Queens of the stone age records. Ed and I haven't really gotten out of the obsession with The Beatles.

MARLON: I mostly listened to house and disco music when I was younger as that's what my parents were into. I didn’t start listening to guitar music until I met these boys.

What was the first album you remember owning?

ED: I remember listening to the Beatles album box set on CD. Played them loads when I was younger. Those albums made me obsessed with music.

MARLON: I remember being very excited whenever a Boney M. record came on in the car.

LUCIEN: My very first memory of listening to music was when ‘favorite worst nightmare’ came out. I must have been about 6 or 7. I loved to see it.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

ED: Probably something off London Calling like “Guns of Brixton”.

MARLON: ‘Momentary Bliss’ of the new Gorillaz album. Such a sick song with so much going on. Executed to perfection, would have loved to work on it. GREG: It’s not a song, but the guitar solo of the Beatles cover of ‘till there was you’ is pure class. George did the absolute business on that one. Would have loved to come up with it.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

LUCIEN: I begin by making some frappes for the boys. Maybe some beans on toast as well if they are feeling peckish.

MARLON: Once we get the frappes in us, we are normally raring to go and just jam them out.

GREG: Sometimes we turn off all the lights in our shed and just play in complete darkness. Helps get us encapsulated in the music we are writing.

ED: It’s rather spiritual.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

ED: Love the Chubby and the Gang album. Very raw, very nice.

MARLON: Been banging out Spoort. Got such sick tunes, we are all big fans of them.

LUCIEN: I really like Junodream. Their new tunes are class as well.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

GREG: The Specials would be mad.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

ED: The most rewarding thing is us being able to do this everyday. Writing songs and going to studios. Gigging. It’s all great.

And what is the most frustrating part?

GREG: There’s nothing too frustrating, I guess the only thing at the moment is not being able to play all these songs we’ve written live but we are on the way out now so we should be able to soon. Planning some MASSIVE gigs as we speak.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

GREG: Not really advice but when we played our local festival a few years ago, my mate who used to be signed to a major label and heavily in the industry told us we were “Fuck all”. Made us realise how hard we had to work. We were very much in our own little world back then.

MARLON: We hadn’t ventured outside of our local area for gigs or anything. We needed that kick up the arse to go out there and get in peoples faces.
