Getting To Know... Strawberry Aqua

After spending the last few months building and developing their sound, LA-based duo Strawberry Aqua are now ready to introduce themselves to the world with their glittering debut single 'Last Dance'.

Taking their cues from Chvrches with its vivid electro-pop direction, 'Last Dance' makes for an invigorating introduction to their sound. Filled with bold textures, a soaring atmosphere, and some wonderfully engaging vocals throughout, these two look set for big things on the horizon.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Becca - Piano.

Marion - Found music through singing.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Becca - Broadway musicals (Wicked, Phantom, Le Mis) and punk (My Chemical Romance, Green Day).

Marion - Britney Spears, White Stripes, NSYNC, Vitamin C.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Becca - My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.

Marion - Spice Girls.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Becca and Marion - Bohemian Rhapsody.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Becca - Whenever a melody idea comes to me––regardless of where I am––I stop everything and record it as a voice memo. I always prioritise the melody before lyrics.

Marion - Humming melodies and trying to find lyrics that fit.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Becca - Imogen Heap, Charlie XCX, ABBA.

Marion - Vampire Weekend, Spotify playlists i.e. Pollen, New Music Friday.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Becca - Taylor Swift.

Marion - Vampire Weekend.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Becca - I love writing catchy melodies that get stuck in your head.

Marion - Watching people be positively affected by your music.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Becca - Knowing which feedback to incorporate and not taking feedback too personally.

Marion - The amount of time it takes to create and publish a single song.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Becca - “The most important part of making music is knowing when a melody is not strong and quickly setting it aside to write something better.”

Marion - “You have to feel the emotion when singing. It's like acting––without emotion it just falls flat.”
